Secretary Hutch Makeover

Style shelves and mantels is one of my favourite things. Clearing out, organizing, and creating a new look is what relaxes me. Pat Conroy would describe it as “Like a folding seat let out by the pool”.

This is what I was having fun with the other day. There are lots of textural browns and glossy whites. It feels good… for the moment.

9 Inspiring Trash-to-treasure Projects

I’ve got flea market fever lately, y’all.

Kevin asked me what I wanted for my birthday this month. I replied that I wanted something sweet, something to read, and some time at Amy’s Antiques. Kevin asked me what I wanted for my birthday earlier this month. I replied that something sugary, or something to read, and that I would like to spend a couple of hours at Amy’s Antiques.

Lucky for me and my thoughtful husband, June 5th brought with itself a coconut cream pie (my favourite!) The book is pictured above. It’s so inspiring! It was too busy for me to go to the flea markets, so I had to put off. It was still fun to walk around the flea market a week later than I had planned. Amy Antique’s closed, but Eastbrook was so I went. You can view the videos I took while out and about on Instagram by clicking on my profile picture (on the app).

In the spirit of flea market fever, I thought it would fun to share a post on some amazing “trash to treasure” makeovers. These make me want transform!

How To Decorate A Top Of A Armoire

Recently, I helped a friend design the top of her armoire. I thought I’d share some of our ideas in this post.

There are many ways to arrange items on top of an armoire. However, I have three favorites. First, place a taller (flatter) object against the wall at the back. Then use different-height items in front.

The items at the front are also very attractive. The basket measures about half as high as the sheep picture. The largest white pitcher is approximately half the size of the basket. Smaller pitchers are roughly half the height. You can add a boxwood wreath at the front.

Another arrangement that I like is to use a group of nearly identical but different-height items, such as they did here with these green glass jugs.

Another similar example is where they used three glasses jugs but changed the color of one middle one. They then highlighted the new tone with live foliage.

Happy Tuesday!

Recently, I helped a friend design the top of her armoire. I thought I’d share some of our ideas in case you need any more inspiration.

There are many ways to arrange items on top of an armoire. However, I have three favorites. First, place a taller (flatter) object against the wall at the back. Then use different-height items in front.

Another great example is this: A larger, flatter section in the back with some shorter items in front.

(French Country Cottage).

The items at the front are also very attractive. The basket measures about half as high as the sheep picture. The largest white pitcher is approximately half the size of the basket. Smaller pitchers are roughly half the size of the larger pitchers. You can add a boxwood wreath at the front.

The last thing you should try is this technique if your height is less than the height of the armoire. It uses three items. It consists of a bucket, a basket, and a bundle with faux floral stems. These faux flowers cascade over the basket’s edge, as shown in the photos.

It’s super simple and absolutely stunning!

Another great way to group items is shown in the last example.

The hat that hangs in one corner is my favorite, and I love how the clear glass containers don’t obscure the artwork behind it. Because it is the same color as the hat and scaled perfectly, the antler sculpture balances the vignette beautifully. Although it isn’t as tall as the artwork, it’s just as small as the largest glass jug. It also has a light visual weight, which is a nice compliment to the visually lighter (because they are clear) jugs. Personally, I would have the white frame removed behind the black, but it is a wonderful example of a visually balanced grouping.

Christmas Centerpiece Quick And Easy

Friends, Happy Friday!

Thanksgiving break begins in T minus two hours here (squeeeeee! However, I wanted to share this video of the simple Christmas centerpiece that I have in the middle our table. It was my goal to make something from only items I had, and it turned out so snuggly! You can watch it by pressing play.

Isn’t it great? Although we aren’t hosting a large family gathering, Katie and I have had a lot of fun decorating the halls. These evergreen garlands were hung on Katie’s staircase banister. They look so festive and realistic!

Soon, we’ll add some delicate red bows. The living room is getting a lot better with the built-in cabinets. I will be back with more photos soon!
